Mens Religious Jewelry: The Outer Show of the Spirit Within

For most of the history of mankind, the women have always used their jewelry to show off or to show up, however, mens religious jewelry does deserve a place in the books as well. This is the continuation of the men vs. women syndrome. That being said; it is of utmost importance that we go on to say that the religious jewelry that adorn men's bodies are for the expression of faith, not necessarily the show of ostentatious living like it used to be. To explain:

During Biblical times, the men did wear a lot of jewelry. This was, in large part, to show their importance and as a way of holding onto their wealth. The show of jewelry was more of a symbol than it is now of the status of the wearer and how rich or prominent they were. There are many stories about how the father's greatest asset to leave his sons was his rings. A new ruler was "crowned" and then given the holy ring. Many of the Egyptian monarchs were buried with all of their jewelry in a vain attempt to "take it with them". Mens religious jewelry was as common as it was gaudy.

A very large portion of the religious jewelry was made from common, natural materials such as bones, wood, shells, and stones. Then, of course, the richer the person, they moved up into precious stones and ivory, inlaid with other stones or covered with gold. Some mens jewelry was even made from gold and silver, as they are now, not so much as a symbol of their wealth but as an indication that they appreciated the thoughts and feelings that this showing gave them while they went about their daily activities.

Mens religious jewelry, today, will take on many forms. These jewelry items are such things as rings with inscriptions, tie clips with a fish symbol. As a matter of fact, many things that are used as a religious expression can be seen with this very outward sign of Christianity on it! Belts, wallets, necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings; you name it and it can be used as a symbol of religious expression in day-to-day social activities.

The Celtic Crosses that symbolize an Irish Spirit of God's love can be seen in almost all walks of life except those areas where religious expression is forbidden. The standard Christian Cross or the Catholic's Crucifix is a common sight on many men in everyday life. The signs of friendship that is displayed with a simple smile on the yellow background can be considered, by some, to be a genuine sign of Christian tenderness, especially in times of stress or other traumatic occasions. There are quite a few men who would not wear any kind of jewelry, except their wedding band, however, that is slowly changing as men find out that people do appreciate the outward appearance of showing the faith and/or familiar religious symbols. That kind of person that does "wear their religion on their sleeve," so to speak. It's not surprising therefore, that all types of mens religious jewelry are making a big come back!
